NUANS Searches!
The first step to setting up a new Federal or Provincial corporation, or moving a company to another jurisdiction, is obtaining a NUANS Report. This report allows the Registrar of Companies to determine if there are companies with exact or confusingly similar names already registered. It also allows you to know if there are any existing trademarks that could prevent you from using the name you have chosen even if it can be registered under company legislation.
NUANS reports for Federal, Alberta, and Ontario companies are $34.95 including GST. Your report will include an opinion letter on the suitability of the proposed name. Reports are emailed the next business day. You will need to print two copies of the report. One for your minute book and one to submit when you register your company. Some provincial jurisdictions conduct their own name searches and the procedure is different for each province. If you purchase one of our forms packages and are not setting up a company in one of the three jurisdictions named above, then we will help guide you through the naming process.

It is mandatory that your name end with an acceptable corporate identifier. Limited, Incorporated, Corporation, Ltd., Inc., or Corp., and their French equivalents, are all acceptable endings. In addition, subject to restrictions, you can use "Professional Corporation" at the end of the name. You must have permission from a governing body before using this ending.
